Art in City Hall Call for Artists: Paper Works!

October 1 - January 1, 2010.
2nd and 4th floors, NE corner.
Juror: Winifred A. Lutz
Submissions due: August 14th, 4pm

"PAPER WORKS!" is a celebration of works that utilize paper as a medium, including art books, paper sculpture, papier-mâché sculpture, assemblages, collages, constructions and installations - not simply works on paper.

Submit up to four digital images on CD, no larger than 1MB each, 72dpi resolution. Identify each image with artist name, title, medium and dimensions on a separate piece of paper or on entry form. Make sure numbering matches digital submissions.

Artworks must fit in the exhibition display cases (height 7' x length 8' x width 2').

Submit a brief artist statement (no more than half a page) and current resume.

Altered Books--Brian Dettmer

(New Books of Knowledge, 2009, Altered Set of Encyclopedias, 16" x 26-1/2" x 10")

A few months ago I came across Dettmer's work and I scrawled his name on a bright yellow piece of paper, then tucked it away. Recently I unearthed that piece of paper and wanted to share with all of you, who are so passionate about books (and whatever forms they take!).

Pterodactyl Philadelphia--New Creative Art Space

Pterodactyl Philadelphia is a new creative art space in Port Richmond.
Pterodactyl’s mission is to revive the enjoyment and practice of creating
art for personal fulfillment, to create exhibitions and experiences that
resonate meaningfully with diverse audiences, and to bring people together through the arts.

Space is available for events, workshops, and classes. Inquiries are welcome for the use of their space. They have an open classroom/gallery area (865 sq ft), equipped with tables and chairs.

Pterodactyl is about to launch their summer session of classes, which includes Screen Printing, Sewing, and Photography.

They are planning their upcoming fall session, and would like to potentially expand their course offerings to include classes on bookmaking, or hybrid classes that combine bookmaking and screen printing, etc.

Scissors: Pop-Up Exhibition--CALL FOR ENTRY

The Popular Edge: Book Art News from Popular Kinetics Press

The Florida Craftsmen Gallery in St. Petersburg is calling for submissions from book artists and paper engineers for their upcoming juried and invitational show "Scissors: Pop-Up." The juror is Margaret Miller of the University of South Florida's Contemporary Art Museum and Graphic Studio.

Deadline for submissions: August 10, 2009
Exhibition will run September 18-October 31, 2009

*Artists must submit a minimum of 3 digital images of the book for review, including one detail in jpeg format on a CD. (Files should be no larger than 8 x 12 inches at 300 dpi resolution.)
*The entry may be one-of-a-kind or created and published in an edition, but cannot be a trade edition.
*Submission fee is $10.
