LIBRO CURIO Opening Reception

Philadelphia Center for the Book and the National Archives and Records Administration at Philadelphia (NARA) will be celebrating the exhibition Libro Curio: Reconstructing the Book with an opening reception on this date. The exhibit features work of PCB members who were inspired by book debris, such as book spines and fragments, discovered during a demolition project at NARA.

We hope that the exhibit, among other things, will stimulate visitors to think about book and paper conservation, book construction techniques, the role of government in daily life, storytelling, and the uses of primary sources.

The exhibit will be on view until April 2012.

Workshop with Pati Scobey

Here is your chance to sign up for a workshop offered by the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers with the talented printmaker Pati Scobey. Entitled "The Printed Page: Hand Printing Techniques," the workshop will be held November 14 & 15 at the University of the Arts, 333 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia.

Investigate the interaction of image and sequence while experimenting with hand printing techniques. Students will learn a form of water-based printing that will allow them to develop a vocabulary of interchangeable printing components comprised of collagraphs and individual stencils. These components will be used as improvisational tools during the printing process. Printing instruction will emphasize the manipulation of inks and color to achieve desired results. The workshop will culminate in each participant's creation of a print series or printed pages for a future book.

Workshop Fee: Members and Non-members $200.
Materials Fee: $35 (payable to the instructor)

Building by the Book: Book Artists Reminder: Respond to Architecture and Design--Call for Entry

The Athenaeum of Philadelphia, in collaboration with Philadelphia Center for the Book, invite artists to submit proposals for a book that they will create in response to selected works from the Athenaeum's legacy research collection of architecture and design.
