Upcoming Deadlines and Calls for Entry

Nobel Museum Bookbinding Exhibition Call for Entry - Application Deadline June, 15, 2012

Applications are currently being accepted for the collaboration between the Nobel Museum and the Swedish Bookbinders Guild & Master Binders Association. The exhibition is set to honor the Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The exhibition is open to the international bookbinding community.
Thomas Tranströmer is widely known internationally and his works have been translated into over 60 different languages. For this reason, we have chosen not to print a special edition of his work for this exhibition. Instead, it will be open for each participant to choose which edition they would like to bind.
Apart from the artistic freedom this allows, it will also help to affirm the broad international success of Tranströmer's works.
The exhibition will be open at the Nobel Museum in Stockholm in February 2013. A jury led by the Nobel Museum's Director, Olov Amelin, will assess both the technical and functional characteristics of the bound volume, as well as their innovative designs and choices of material. Twenty-five of the 150 volumes selected for exhibition will receive special commendation for their work.
A detailed catalogue containing rich photographic material will also be produced. The catalog will also contain the contact details (e-mail addresses) of each respective contributor. Any book sales can thereby be arranged directly between the buyer and the master binder. Receipt of a copy of the catalogue is included as part of the registration fee.
After the exhibition closes in Stockholm, we plan to take the exhibition on tour to two additional locations.
Registration fee is SEK 750
For more information and to complete the application, visit the Nobel Museum site. Application is due June 15, 2012. The binding is due December 1, 2012.

Cooper Union Artist Books Class

Room is still available in the Cooper Union Artist Books Class!

Artist Books with Esther K. Smith
Cooper Union | 6:30-9:30PM | Tuesdays, June 5- July 31 | 9 sessions

Artist books are containers for drawing, writing, painting, prints, collage, and even experimental and electronic media. This class explores a different structural approach each day. Students first make quick models, look at artist books, and then develope their own pieces. Learn to make books from Eastern and Early Western traditions that require only a few tools and almost no glue: stitched books, accordion-based forms, and simple pop-ups. Even make your own long-stitch leather-covered sketchbooks or journals with your favorite papers.

Open Book Workshop

Over the last two decades, there have been a number of essays and, ironically, books—that predict the demise of traditional books in the wake of digital media. Defining the term “book” loosely, as a vehicle for visual or verbal content that is organized into “sections,” this intensive ten‐day workshop will challenge overly simplistic, even fatalistic, ideas about the demise of physical books by stressing instead the ways novel renditions of physical and digital and hybrid “books” carry meaning. The objective is to encourage participants to explore unconventional forms that books may take and to create an artwork/designed object that challenges ideas of what books can be.

The 10-day intensive workshop will be organized by Leslie Atzmon and Ryan Molloy, and led by Edwin Jager and Danielle Aubert. While the instructors will guide the direction of and lead discussions at the workshop, participants will be asked to contribute their particular knowledge and skill sets and contribute to the topic through presentations of their ideas and their creative work or research. The workshop is open to students, educators, and professionals from all disciplines.

The Open Book workshop runs from July 27 through August 05, 2012.The cost of the workshop is now $425.00 (students who want credit pay tuition + $260.00).The application deadline for the workshop has been extended to May 25th, 2012. Participants can download the application here

This workshop is an offshoot of the “Open Book” experimental book exhibition that was held in Eastern Michigan University’s University Gallery from April 3 to June 15, 2010. http://openbookexhibit.com.
Support for this workshop has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Art Works grant, Eastern Michigan University, and Eastern Michigan University's Women in Philanthropy. This workshop is also in partnership with AIGA Detroit and AIGA Toledo.

Maria G Pisano - Curator: “Book as Witness: The Artist's Response” July 11-Sept 15, 2012
Center for Book Arts 28 West 27th St, NYC - www.centerforbookarts.org
Book as Witness: The Artist's Response - presents artists who are continuing the tradition of creating book works as keepers of our collective memory. They use the book format, in its myriad transformative powers, to express their interpretive and personal memory stories. The exhibit will present works of artists who use the book form to create pieces dealing with death and destruction as a result of global conflicts, prejudice, terrorism, natural disasters, and individual losses. These books are powerful mementos, and even as they focus on death, they commemorate life. The artists assemble objects, memories and realities, and embody them in a tactile form that resonates with their journey to find meaning in personal or communal losses. The books speak of time, memory and history. As memories accumulate they are selected, organized and stored within; accessing these visual echoes and finding these markers, they surface as art objects.

Cool Books on Book Arts

The Silent Scream

The Silent Scream: Political and Social Comment in Books by Artists presents not
only a companion catalogue to an exhibition held at the Monash University Rare
Books Library, but also provides insights into 77 influential books and works presented
in book form in the past 90 years. Monica Oppen and Peter Lyssiotis, both practicing
artists, lend their unique perspective in the social content and the techniques
behind the production of these books.

The catalogue presents phases of books by artists in three sections with an additional
category for those works that stand on the periphery of the blurred line defining
"artists' books." The sections are organized chronologically beginning in 1918 and
extending to today. Sections include "Across Two World Wars 1918-1950," "Cold War
in a Nuclear Era: Alienation and Engagement 1960-1990," Imperialism, Fundamentalism,
Democracy, Oil, and its Shadow," and "Along the Tangent: Books on the Edge." Beginning
with essays by Walter Struve, Scott McQuire, Humphrey McQueen and Des Cowley, the
sections serve to analyze each period's distinctive characteristics.

In a field where few books cover such a wide range of work, The Silent Scream both
educates and entertains through informed commentary. It focuses on a particular
field of ideas: social and political, and on a particular area of book production:
books made by artists. With over 200 color illustrations, this book is beautiful
and formatted in an original style.

Multiple, Limited, Unique

Multiple, Limited, Unique is the culmination of the three-year effort of the Center
for Book Arts Collections Initiative. It offers an overview of the history and development
of book arts over the past 40 years, and examines the role of the Center in both
nurturing and promoting innovative artists and preserving traditional artistic
practices.

Fine & Dirty

This book explores letterpress printing in the twenty-first century. By looking
at recent developments in letterpress and examining art made by several influential
artists, this catalogue shows many facets of fine press printing such as typography,
book design, binding, and papermaking. It also examines the cause of the radical
change in the letterpress medium and investigates the rebirth of letterpress printing
as an art.
