Three more days until the Edible Book Festival!

The Edible Book Festival is on Sunday!  I hope you're excited about joining us for some delicious fun!  It's going to be a really great event this year as we partner with Queen Village Art Center.  Here's a "menu" of what we have planned:

• Starting at 4pm - Marvel at the smorgasbord of scrumptious volumes and vote for your favorites!  Have you entered your "treat"ise into the contest yet?  Enter here!
• Starting at 4:30pm - Enjoy refreshments while the artists speak about their work!  After the votes are tallied, we'll all eat their work too!
• At any time during the event, from 4pm-6pm, visit a craft table to make your own edible creations!  

Are you crafty, and do you enjoy helping others?  We could still use a few volunteers to assist at the craft tables and help with event clean up.  If you are interested in lending a hand, please contact Valeria Kremser (and THANKS, in advance)!

Edible Book Festival 2012 - Flyer and Information

Philadelphia Center for the Book and the Queen Village Art Center are happy to announce the Second Annual Edible Book Festival! The International Edible Book Festival is held annually world-wide on April 1st, partially to celebrate the birthday of French gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755 - 1826), and partially to celebrate the fun of eating your own words. An edible book can be simply defined as an edible object that somehow relates to books. It may integrate text, illustrate literary titles or content, or represent book form. You can read more about edible books at the official website, www.books2eat.com. Join us for refreshments, crafts, and, of course, edible books. Vote for your favorite and then eat it! Artists’ talks will take place at 4:30 and, while the votes are being tallied, the eating of the books will begin. The Poetic Pen: Celebrating Calligraphy and Poetry

23 Sandy Gallery invites you to celebrate the beautiful word by entering

The Poetic Pen, a juried exhibition of calligraphic artwork that uses

poetry as a primary textual focus.  Calligraphers throughout history have

employed poetry to illustrate the art and fine craft of lettering,

letterforms and calligraphic design. This show is open to pen or brush

works in the form of wall-hung pieces, broadsides, books, sculptural

objects and more. Will be held in conjunction with the Calligraphy

Northwest Calligraphy Conference, which will bring over 500 fans of

calligraphy to Portland in June 2012.

Eileen Wallace, Visiting Assistant Professor in Printmaking and Book Arts at the University of Georgia, will discuss the results of her research regarding Italian ledger binding structures.  She will also share images of her recent work inspired by these simple yet striking books.  The lecture will include an examination of the remarkable Biccherne, or painted wooden book covers, used exclusively on account books in Siena, Italy from the 13th-17th centuries.

CALL FOR BOOK AND PAPER ARTISTS
Shin Jidai: Contemporary Japanese Book and Paper Arts
Minnesota Center for Book Arts (Minneapolis, MN)


Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA) seeks art to be included in a juried exhibition of contemporary Japanese book and paper arts. The exhibition will be on display in MCBA's Star Tribune Foundation Gallery from May 19 through July 15, 2012. Eligible work may include, but is not limited to: sumi-e, calligraphy, origami, kirie (paper-cutting) moku hanga (Japanese watercolor woodcut prints,) handmade paper, hand bookbinding, or any paper-based work that upholds the traditions of Japanese book and paper arts.


There is no entry or participation fee. Selected artists will be responsible for all shipping costs. While on view at MCBA's gallery, all work will be fully insured.
