MEMBERS & FRIENDS MEETING AT BARTRAM'S GARDEN

Join us this Spring at the historic home and garden of the Bartrams, America’s pioneering family of naturalists, botanists and explorers.

On this site more than 275 years ago, John Bartram, a Quaker farmer, was stopped in his tracks by a daisy while plowing his fields. The plant’s simplicity and beauty inspired John and his son, William to spend the rest of their lives exploring, collecting and seeking to understand all forms of nature.

Included in their historic collection are examples of John and William Bartram's publications, and a small selection of artwork by William Bartram.

We will be led by Curator Joel Fry on a tour the garden, visit the John Bowman Bartram Special Collections Library, and will learn about the history of the Bartram family.

Edible Book Festival

As you may know, The International Edible Book Festival is held annually on April 1st, partially to celebrate the birthday of French gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755 - 1826), and partially to celebrate the fun of eating your own words. You can read more about edible books at the official website, www.books2eat.com.

We are very excited to start participating in this Festival and urge you to make an edible book! At the event we will eat non-book snacks and potluck items, photograph and enjoy the books, vote for our favorites, then eat them! As an incentive to participate, the favorite books as voted on by the attendees will receive prizes.

Bodies of Text: A PCB and Dance Company Collaboration

A series of collaborative dance performances and art exhibitions tied to the book and its interdisciplinary interpretations. Premiering as a part of the 2011 Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts and its theme of Paris 1911.

Tickets are available through the CEC (Box Office: 215-387-1911) and through PIFA at www.Pifa.org.

Performances will be followed by a discussion between choreographers and book artists, examining the transformation from printed page to stage, and accompanied by storefront exhibits of artist books and related material. Featured books will also be on view alongside each performance.

Women's Studio Workshop, in Rosendale, New York, has been publishing artists' books since 1979 and to date has produced over 180 titles. In conjunction with the exhibit at the Free Library, Book is a book is a book is a book. Or is it? 30 Years of Publishing -- A Selection of Artists' Books from Women's Studio Workshop, the founders of WSW, Ann Kalmbach and Tatana Kellner, will give a presentation on the history of WSW and the opportunities for artists there. Join Philadelphia Center for the Book at our next Members Meeting, hosted by Hahnemann Library, where we will view the exhibition of artists' books currently on display, Stretching the Spine: Books on Health and Healing. The exhibition explores medicine, health, and healing as interpreted through the form of the artists' book. Presented within the context of a working medical library, the books and book-inspired objects embody a range of approaches to this theme.

Several of the artists will be at the meeting, and will present commentary to the group about their design and production processes. Stay for refreshments courtesy of Hahnemann Library, and a discussion of PCB news and events. Looking forward to seeing you there!
