Bookmaking Workshop: Round Robin Books

In sports, a round robin tournament is when each contestant is matched in turn against every other contestant. In this workshop, participants will act as the contestants matched in turn with circulating sheets of paper and will contribute using a variety of mark-making techniques (drawing, collage, frottage, tracing, transfers, stamping, etc.). As the papers circulate, we will fold them into sections to define the pages and create our own itineraries through the book. Participants will also bind their single-section books with a choice of simple cover attachments. Everyone will leave with a personalized, one-of-a-kind copy of the collaborative edition.

This workshop also includes a tour of Keith Smith at Home with the show’s curator, Amanda Bock, the Lynne and Harold Honickman Assistant Curator of Photographs.

Job Posting: Head of Preservation Senior Assistant Librarian, Binghamton University

Binghamton University Libraries seeks an innovative, collaborative and service-oriented librarian to join a department of library and information professionals. Under the general direction of the Director of Technical Services, the Head of Preservation coordinates our Libraries-wide preservation efforts and develops and implements programs for long-term preservation of the Libraries' collection.  The Head of Preservation collaborates with Reader Services, Research Services, Special Collections and Library Technology to develop Libraries-wide efforts for preservation, bindery operations, disaster preparedness and other programs to enhance the preservation of library material.

• Provides leadership and direction for a comprehensive library preservation program, including defining and prioritizing needs, establishing goals, objectives, plans and their implementation in alignment with the Libraries' strategic direction;

• Hires, supervises, trains, mentors and evaluates preservation staff;

• Cultivates a culture of innovation and continuous improvement and fosters the ongoing growth and professional development of the department's professional and support staff;

• Oversees bindery operations. Oversees contract negotiation and implementation for monographic and serial binding and re-binding;

• Investigates, recommends, and implements new strategies and technologies to address challenges to long-term preservation and access, addressing both traditional materials and those born digital;

• Collaborates with Head of Digital Initiatives & Resource Discovery in developing an effective and achievable strategy to establish a cohesive digital preservation program ensuring the long-term viability of university digital assets regardless of format.

Minimum Qualifications:

• ALA accredited MLS or equivalent degree.

• Three years of supervisory experience.

• Two years of appropriate post-MLS or post-equivalent-degree professional experience working with preserving, conserving or digitizing library, archival, or museum collections.

• Demonstrated knowledge of preservation practices, issues, and emerging trends.

• Strong leadership skills and ability to work independently, collaboratively, and in teams within the Libraries and university.

• Demonstrated effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

• Demonstrated project management, organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills.

Popping Up and Out: Advanced Paper Engineering for Book Artists

In this intermediate workshop, participants will take their knowledge of basic pop-up techniques to the next level to create complex variations. Some mechanisms we’ll explore include opposing angle folds, parallel and angle lifting platforms, three-dimensional shapes, revolving mechanisms and pivoting pull-tabs. Once mastered, these mechanisms can become the building blocks for spectacular three-dimensional inventions. Participants will all go home with at least one finished pop-up spread. Colette's 5-day workshop is part of the second annual Summer Institute for Book and Print Technologies taking place at Mills College June 5-16, 2017. This two-week summer institute is open to members of the national book art community and will include 5-day workshops taught at the master class level by well-known book and print artists, a master critique seminar and a pricing seminar.

Two Opportinities at Tacony Library and Arts Building (LAB)

Call for Artists: Mural Arts Program Artist Residency

Deadline March 6: Mural Arts Philadelphia invites visual artists working in any medium to apply for the Tacony Library and Arts Building (LAB) 2017 Spring-Summer Artist Residency. This 12-week residency residency, housed in a storefront library on the Torresdale Avenue Commercial Corridor in Northeast Philadelphia, is a unique opportunity to combine personal practice, community engagement, and the creation of civically-focused public art. The Tacony LAB Artist Residency is open to visual artists based in the Philadelphia area with experience in public art and/or community engagement. Artists need not have experience in mural-making to be considered.

The Tacony Community Development Corporation (CDC) has identified the creation of new street banners for Torresdale Avenue as a key 2017 development goal. The LAB’s 2017 Spring-Summer resident artist will create these banners in collaboration with community members. 

The artist selected for the residency will have access to the LAB studio space for both personal practice and project creation; the space will be shared with LAB art classes and workshops.

The artist will receive a total stipend of $4,000, in addition to full funding for materials and supplies associated with banner creation. The artist will be expected to spend approximately 15 hours per week on-site in the studio and the Tacony neighborhood. Some of this time will be devoted to engaging the community through weekly activities with youth and adults. The artist will develop these activities in collaboration with the LAB Project Manager and the library staff. The artist will also be expected to take part in LAB open houses, relevant community meetings, and similar events.

Call for Teaching Artists: Wednesday Workshops

Deadline March 6: The Tacony Library and Arts Building (LAB), a Mural Arts Philadelphia project, is seeking artists to lead evening art workshops for adults.

These free one-day workshops are held every other Wednesday from 7pm-9pm in the LAB’s studio space. Past workshops have included watercolor, jewelry-making, pysanky, fresco painting, and collage. Interests solicited from attendees for future workshops include fiber art, ceramics, comics, and mosaic. Lecture-based workshops on subjects such as art history, contemporary art trends, and new technologies are also welcome. Revisiting subjects covered in previous workshops is also welcome.

Artist will be responsible for setting up, running the workshop, and breaking it down. Supplies and materials will be provided by MAP. Attendance at workshops will be capped at 15 people. The artist fee for the workshop is $100. Workshops selected will be scheduled throughout 2017.

The Tacony LAB is located in Northeast Philadelphia. It is convenient to I-95 and is a short walk from the Tacony Regional Rail station.

Thanks to the support of Councilman Bobby Henon, the Free Library of Philadelphia and Mural Arts Philadelphia have created the Tacony Library and Arts Building (LAB) at 6918 Torresdale Avenue. This hub for learning, creativity, and community engagement combines a temporary home for Tacony’s neighborhood library with an artists studio. At the LAB, visitors can attend arts-focused events and workshops, borrow books, use computers, and access free Wi-Fi. Through December 2018, Mural Arts will be activating the LAB with art classes for adults and youth, arts-focused events, and resident artists who will work with the community to create public art in Tacony. The Art of Ownership at the Rosenbach

Rosenbach Exhibition The Art of Ownership Explores
the Stories Behind Bookplates

The Rosenbach of the Free Library of Philadelphia presents The Art of Ownership: Bookplates and Book Collectors from 1480 to the Present, on view September 21, 2016 – January 17, 2017. The primary function of a bookplate is simply to indicate the owner of a book, yet book collectors across the centuries have commissioned ornate and evocative designs that do more than designate property. From coats of arms and etched portraits to scenes of libraries and fantastical creatures, these miniature artworks may reveal a great deal about the ancestry, occupation, artistic taste, or philosophy of the men and women who used and circulated them. 

The Art of Ownership features beautiful and curious specimens from five centuries of books in the Rosenbach's collection, along with examples from the Rare Book Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia, the University of Delaware’s William Augustus Brewer Bookplate Collection, and other regional repositories. 

  

Notable bookplates include the oldest known printed bookplate, a hand-colored woodcut circa 1480 [1]; bookplates from the personal libraries of King George III and Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt; an Irish landscape designed by Jack Butler Yeats [2]; and prints by Art Nouveau illustrator Aubrey Beardsley. Some bookplates offer whimsical portraits of the book collectors: William Keeney Bixby's bookplate depicts the owner as an octopus grasping books with all eight tentacles [3], and a lithographic print belonging to E. Norman Sabel depicts an attentive reader who has not noticed that his coattails are on fire. Several remarkable examples belonged to Philadelphian collectors, such as Harry Elkins Widener and Lucy Wharton Drexel. 

The Art of Ownership was made possible by a grant from the Pine Tree Foundation of New York and endowment grants from the Marilyn M. Simpson Trust and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
