Salzberg Artist in Residence Program. It’s a fine opportunity. The 2019/2020 Salzberg Resident receives these rewards:</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">• An office at JCBA.</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">• Full use of JCBA studios and equipment.</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">• Access to office and studios during open hours of the Wimberly Library.</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">• Stipend of $8,000.</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">In exchange, the Salzberg Resident will complete a creative project by August 6, 2020, teach a workshop at JCBA, and mentor students as his or her time allows. Although the Salzberg Residency is for a full academic year, the resident need only spend a minimum of 30 days in residence at JCBA throughout the course of that year. (You may, of course, spend the entire year here or as much of that year as you’d like, but 30 days is the minimum––the residency is designed with built in flexibility so artists with responsibilities outside the residency may still take advantage of its rewards.)</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">The Salzberg Residency is focused on the Book Arts, but in our Creative Project and Workshop guidelines, you will see that JCBA has a very broad interpretation of the Book, and so we encourage artists of all sorts to apply. Find application information, read more about the residency, and meet all of our past Salzberg Residents, including current Salzberg Resident Merike Van Zanten, here at our website:</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;"><</span><a href="http://www.library.fau.edu/depts/spc/JaffeCenter/AIR.php" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">http://www.library.fau.edu/depts/spc/JaffeCenter/AIR.php</a><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">></span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">The list of past residents is an impressive one: Dorothy Simpson Krause (2012), Lorna Ruth Galloway (2012), Paula Marie Gourley (2013), Tom Virgin (2013), Julia Arredondo (2014), Stephanie Wolff (2015), Brooke Frank (2016), Ingrid Schindall (2017), and Marie Marcano (2018). Their disciplines have ranged from letterpress and screen printing to fine binding, calligraphy, zines, painting, and this year, with Merike’s residency, eco printing.</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">The deadline for receipt of applications is 4 PM on Monday August 2, 2019.</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">John Cutrone, Director</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">JCBA: Jaffe Center for Book Arts</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">Florida Atlantic University Wimberly Library</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">777 Glades Road</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">Boca Raton, Florida 33431</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><a href="http://www.jaffecollection.org/" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">www.jaffecollection.org</a><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><a href="http://www.facebook.com/jaffecenterforbookarts" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">www.facebook.com/jaffecenterforbookarts</a><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;">Instagram: @jaffecenterforbookarts</span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" />Philadelphia Center for the Bookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00563225055139944615noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6369222776312506825.post-42440303965052491282019-03-09T17:56:00.000-05:002019-03-09T17:56:56.446-05:00Tucson Festival of Books<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Conference dates are Wednesday through Sunday June 26-30, 2019 with a check-in day of Tuesday, June 25, 2019. This event is held at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon about 30 miles west of Portland, Oregon. We are looking for beginning, intermediate and advanced level workshops but would also like to consider master level workshops that may involve critical problem solving or more advanced hands-on work. The format of the conference is in classes of one, two, or three days. All three-day classes will be on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. All two-day classes will be on Saturday and Sunday. There will be a limited number of one day classes each day. Instructors may submit proposals for the length of days they think appropriate for their class. They may submit a combination of workshops that cover the entire five days of the conference. Each day would be six contact hours, 9:00 until 4:30 with a 1½ hour lunch break. In addition to the individual workshops, the Conference will host evening activities and receptions, a trade show, a sales store, and a Faculty/Staff exhibit. </span><br style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;" /><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px;"><br /></span><br />

In
sports, a round robin tournament is when each contestant is matched in
turn against every other contestant. In this workshop, participants will
act as the contestants matched in turn with circulating sheets of paper
and will contribute using a variety of mark-making techniques (drawing,
collage, frottage, tracing, transfers, stamping, etc.). As the papers
circulate, we will fold them into sections to define the pages and
create our own itineraries through the book. Participants will also bind
their single-section books with a choice of simple cover attachments.
Everyone will leave with a personalized, one-of-a-kind copy of the
collaborative edition.<br />

This workshop also includes a tour of <i><a href="http://www.philamuseum.org/exhibitions/867.html">Keith Smith at Home</a></i> with the show’s curator, Amanda Bock, the Lynne and Harold Honickman Assistant Curator of Photographs.<br />

The primary function of a bookplate is simply to indicate the owner of a book, yet book collectors across the centuries have commissioned ornate and evocative designs that do more than designate property. From coats of arms and etched portraits to scenes of libraries and fantastical creatures, these miniature artworks may reveal a great deal about the ancestry, occupation, artistic taste, or philosophy of the men and women who used and circulated them. </span></div>

Roosevelt; an Irish landscape designed by Jack Butler Yeats [2]; and prints by Art Nouveau illustrator Aubrey Beardsley. Some bookplates offer whimsical portraits of the book collectors: William Keeney Bixby's bookplate depicts the owner as an octopus grasping books with all eight tentacles [3], and a lithographic print belonging to E. Norman Sabel depicts an attentive reader who has not noticed that his coattails are on fire.
